Cornell Abroad, the undergraduate study abroad program of Cornell University, is seeking to hire a Residential Assistant for the Cornell Nepal Study Program (CNSP) in Kirtipur, Nepal, for the academic year 2008-09, consisting of the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 semesters. The program is conducted in cooperation with Tribhuvan University, Nepal, and is described on the Cornell Abroad home page

Responsibilities included in the position for 30 hours work weekly throughout the academic year include:
- coordinating cultural programming for CNSP
- facilitating inter-cultural relations among the U.S. and Nepali program participants
- facilitating relations between program participants and the wider Tribhuvan University and Kathmandu community
- organizing language exchange as part of the residential program
- advising students on issues related to cultural awareness, health, safety, and security
- leading weekend or day excursions in the Kathmandu Valley
- participating in the ten-day study tour each semester
- maintaining the program's web presence from the site in Kirtipur
- other duties as assigned by the Program Director and Cornell Abroad
- submitting three reports each semester on your work with the program
The weekly work commitment may vary during the year according to the needs of the program. The successful candidate will be encouraged to pursue research, independent study, or an internship during the time available apart from the CNSP obligation.
Remuneration includes:
- room and board in one of the program residences throughout the academic year
- round-trip air travel between the U.S. and Kathmandu at the beginning and end of the academic year
- a stipend equivalent to $5000 for the academic year
- medical insurance, including medical evacuation and repatriation insurance, during the term of employment
Qualifications
- experience in Nepal
- demonstrated interest in and knowledge of Nepalese culture, including prior study of Nepali language
- strong interest in inter-cultural communications
- ability to relate well to students in an intensive residential learning situation
- computer and web site management skills
